T-ara dominates Melon Yearly Charts along with YG Artists

Melon has recently published its detailed Yearly Charts. Following the trend of other digital charts (see Naver‘s Yearly charts), it is T-ara‘s Roly Poly that comes out as the biggest winner. The song topped both the overall charts and the download charts. Meanwhile, YG Entertainement ranked the most songs for a company within Melon Top 50 overall. Melon is a sub-company of Loen Entertainment, it is South Korea main digital charts since 2009. Its share of the Korean digital market is estimated to be between 35% and 45%. The second main chart is Mnet, with a share estimated to 22%.

T-ara dominates the overall chart with the hit of 2011, Poly Poly. 2NE1 managed to secure two spots within the Top 10, constituing a big achievement. Other from 2NE1, this Top 10 strikes by its diversity. 9 different companies are represented with songs varying from dance tracks, to hip hop songs or ballads. Overall, the music competition in 2011 has been tougher than the previous years. The overall charts sums up Melon’s download and streaming charts. Both where topped by Roly Poly which is still charting today.

The download Top 10 shows a few fluctuations from the overall Top 10, meaning it was the lack of streaming that prevented some of the above songs to make it on the previous ranking. There is still 9 different companies represented, but it is Core Contents Media that claims two spots with T-ara’s Roly Poly #1 and Davichi‘s Don’t say Goodbye #6. Hit songs usually chart on Melon for an average period of 3 months; only songs released after September are then penalised on this Yearly ranking. All 7 top songs were released during the summer, between June 30th to August 30th.

Although Infinity Challenge‘s album topped Melon Album Yearly charts, it is Big Bang which comes out as the biggest seller. No less than 4 of their albums made it within the Top 50, while its sub-unit, GD&TOP, ranked #3. 4 variety shows compilation albums are featured within the Top 10; IU‘s Real ranked #6 despite being released in December 2010; SNSD also made it on the Top 10 in spite of having only 52 days to chart.

 

Overall Top 50 Summary:

Although the full list wasn’t unveiled, Melon revealed that 2NE1 managed to rank 4 songs within the Top 50, I Am The Best #3; Ugly #6; Lonely #16 and Hate You #27 while Park Bom‘s Don’t Cry ranked #15. To that can be added Big Bang’s Tonight and Love Song, along with GD&TOP’s High High and Oh Yeah (feat. Park Bom) which ranked within the Top 50, to make of YG Entertainment the biggest overall winner on Melon charts.

IU is this year best solo artist on Melon with 3 songs ranking within the Top 50, Good Day (released last December), The Story Only I Didn’t Know and Someday. Wonder Girls manage to rank #13 with Be My Baby despite the late release. A special mention goes to TV programs I Am A Singer and Superstar K3 whose songs that were digitally released have been tough contenders all year long, and secured very honorable positions on Melon different Yearly charts.
