Rain’s R2B: Return to Base spotted on the western horizon

For those of you who have been living under a rock, you may have missed the fact that Jung Ji-Hoon’s  (a.k.a. Rain’s) new action blockbuster film, R2B: Return to Base, was released in South Korea on August 15.  Then again, maybe not, because according to Nate News, the film came in for a landing at 4th place at the box office on its opening day.  That’s not too shabby for a movie whose leading man wasn’t even allowed to promote it because of his mandatory military service in the R.O.K. Army, eh?

Even better news for Rain’s global fans, though, was the announcement from CJ Entertainment America  that the film would enjoy a limited release at select theaters in North America.  The film, which will be subtitled in English (and Chinese) will open on Friday, August 24, at the following theaters in U.S.A. and Canada:

U.S.A.:
Atlanta, GA – AMC Colonial 18
Chicago, IL – AMC Showplace Niles
Dallas, TX – AMC Grapevine Mills
Honolulu, HIConsolidated Pearlridge
Los Angeles, CA – CGV Cinemas and AMC Atlantic Times Square
Monterey Park, CA – AMC Atlantic Times Square (Chinese Subtitles)
New Jersey – AMC Ridgefield Park
New York – AMC Empire
Philadelphia, PA – AMC 309
San Diego, CA – AMC La Jolla
Seattle, WA – AMC Alderwood
Washington D.C. – AMC Hoffman

Canada:
Toronto, ON – Cineplex Odeon Yonge & Dundas
Vancouver, BC – Cineplex Silvercity Coquiltam

R2B: Return to Base, directed by Kim Dong-won, produced by Red Muffler and Pocket Film and distributed by CJ Entertainment, is an aerial action thriller remake of Shin Sang-ok’s 1964 film entitled, Red Scarf.  The budget for R2B: Return to Base was an estimated 10 Billion KRW.  Producers enlisted the help of the R.O.K Air Force and the famed Hollywood aviation company, Wolfe Air, to capture high-speed shots of the movie’s F-15K and TA-50 jets in action.  It took almost 10 months in post-production to perfect the film’s aerial scenes.

The top cast members of the film include: Jung Ji-Hoon (Rain) as Jung Tae-hun, Yu Jun-sang as Cheol-hui, Shin Se-Kyung as Se-yeong, Kim Sung-soo as Park Dae-seo, Lee Ha-na as Yu-jin, and Lee Jong-suk as Ji Seok-hyeon.

For more information on the film and its North American release, visit CJ Entertainment America’s official R2B: Return to Base website.  In the meantime, please sit back and enjoy the awesome, English-subtitled trailer for the film below:

Synopsis (courtesy of CJ Entertainment America):

They have 7 minutes to pull off the biggest airborne mission in history.
South Korean Air Force pilot Tae-hun is kicked out of his elite show team, the Black Eagles, and demoted into a combat unit after pulling a dangerous stunt at the air show. On the first day of his transfer to Squad 20, he has a run-in with Cheol-hui, the unit’s leader. Tae-hun’s rebellious swagger and Cheol-hui’s buttoned down discipline come into conflict almost immediately. Nonetheless, Tae-hun easily befriends the rest of his new squad, including ace mechanic Se-yeong, whom he immediately falls for. Tae-hun sets his sights on winning the annual Air Force flying competition to topple Cheol-hui, impress Se-yeong, and get back to his beloved Black Eagles.

One day, a routine reconnaissance mission for the squad is upturned when an enemy North Korean jet enters South Korean airspace signaling a desire to defect but ending in the untimely death of a team member and the disappearance of another behind enemy lines. Tae-hun and Cheol-hui are tapped to lead a daring and unsanctioned mission to rescue their man down in the DMZ and avert a nuclear disaster! 7 minutes will be all they have to complete the impossible R2B mission!”

Really good article Terri! It’s great to see the success of R2B from the very beginning, even if like you mentioned, Rain who’s the leading man couldn’t be there for the promotion, an awesome guy full of talented, who deserves all the support he receive. I was really happy when I read that the movie is going to be release in different theaters around the world, wishing all the best for R2B in North America, Canada and all the countries it will be release!! :)

Great article! Rain is my favorite performer and I know about his amazing acting skills so this movie is going to be amazing! Is a shame Rain can promote it because he’s doing military service but to his fans, that doesn’t matter; we love to see him in the big screen! Is great that Return to base will be release in the USA. Sadly I will have to wait for the dvd.
