EXO-M Kris’s lawsuit against SM Entertainment confirmed
Multiple Korean media have confirmed that EXO’M’s Kris has filed a lawsuit against his label SM Entertainment to have his exclusive contract terminated.
“A lawsuit regarding the termination of the contract has been submitted under Kris’s Chinese name on the 15th.” 10Asia’s article read.
SM Entertainment was quick to deny the allegations this morning but has since confirmed that it was looking into the facts.
“We are perplexed by the incident … we will do our best to keep EXO’s activities on track.” An S.M. Entertainment spokesperson told Yonhap.
allkpop.com reported that Hangeng’s lawyers, who also took SM Entertainment to court will also be representing Kris on the case.
“It is true Kris has filed a suit today (15th) against SM Entertainment for the nullification of his contract… Lawyer Cho Bum Suk, who represented Hangeng, has picked up this case.” A representative was quoted saying on allkpop.
The lawsuit came as a surprise to fans as EXO-K/EXO-M had just only released their new song ‘Overdose’ on May 7 and whether this suit will affect the group’s promotions in Korea and China has yet been confirmed.
Kris’s lawsuit isn’t the first time SM Entertainment has been taken to court by their own artists. JYJ and ex-Super Junior’s Hangeng both took SM to court in 2009 over unlawful contracts.
What do you think of the situation? Were you surprise?

Update 16: EXO-M: Kris’s lawsuit was ‘bad behaviour’ and ‘betrayal of trust’
The remaining EXO-M members have spoken to Chinese media and voiced their frustration with their estranged leader, Kris Wu.
“(Kris) should not have done such a thing without telling anyone in advance, especially when the world tour that we have all been dreaming about is just around the corner.” Tao was quoted in online media Tencent Yule on Thursday.
Tao, who is one of four Chinese members in EXO, labelled Kris’s decision to file a lawsuit against SM Entertainment as ‘bad behaviour’ and a ‘betrayal of trust’.
Update 15: Tao ‘We won’t give up because of one person’
Tao left a message to fans on his Weibo again, asking fans to not give up.
“Listening to our music, I’m thinking about what EXO used to be like. All of that is in the past now, it’s just a beautiful memory. We won’t give up because one person left us, we will work harder and become stronger than before. I feel really grateful in this moment. That’s why I want to work and practice twice as hard. I believe nothing can bring us down. So everyone, be strong, don’t cry… promise me! Let’s say it together.”
Update 14: Kris: ‘I am fine’
Kris has updated his Weibo in response to all the other members.
“A mantis trying to stop a chariot. I am fine. I wish you all the best and that everything will go even better for you guys. Thank you to everyone who supported me and to all your voices of support. Wu Yi Fan will always be here! 2014.5.16.”
The Chinese proverb “螳臂档车” he uses can be interpreted as ‘overestimating oneself’s power can lead to something foolish and impossible.’
Update 13: Tao responds on Weibo
Directly translated from Tao’s weibo update, it says:
“Many things people see are not as it is. Many people like to take sides with those who have a smaller number of people. Many people do not want to believe the truth. A lot of people want to see them together and stay forever. Bu that someone has to leave us. I wish you all the best! EXO good luck~ We love you everyone. The world is nothing to us! No matter what happens, we’ll stay together.”
Update 12: Latest photo shows Kris distant from other members
Meanwhile, Tao has taken it to Weibo to reiterate to fans that his Instagram post was indeed posted by him.
“I Am EXO member Tao, Huang Zitao. Everything I said on Instagram and Weibo is from me. There is nothing to hide.
The truth will surface sooner or later. What is right will be right, what is wrong, will be wrong. Some like to deny the truth, some tend to believe the denied truth. Those who are smart will choose to not deny and not believe.”
This is the last photo of the group promoting their new song Overdose. Kris is pictured standing with a distance with the other members.
Update 11: Suho and Tao responds to Kris’s lawsuit
EXO-K leader Suho has released a statement through OSEN News.
“I cannot understand Kris’s actions. All the members are very shocked right now. Kris did not think of the members and acted very irresponsibly. Our members and our company have no issues. What Kris needs to do now is cancel the lawsuit and apologise to the members.”
Meanwhile, Tao has taken it to his Instagram to released his thoughts of Kris’s lawsuit.
“The road is long, you can go anywhere you want, and no one can make the decision for others. The truth is, the public is always in the dark. Maybe the public will feel for the minority party, but that’s not the truth. Only we, the people going through all this, know the truth. Like us 11 members, our SM company and staff. But outside of that, people are mixing up good and bad. You guys won’t know the feeling of being betrayed by someone, the feeling of everyone siding with the person who betrayed you. You can have your own opinions and viewpoints, but I want to say this – the truth about right and wrong is clear. Our consciences are clear.”
Update 10: Details of Kris’s lawsuit with SM Entertainment revealed
Local media Yonhap News has uncovered the details of Kris’s lawsuit with SM Entertainment.
In the lawsuit, Kris claimed that his label has never considered or respected his opinion and health when scheduling for the group’s promotional activities in South Korea and China.
“The company has treated me like a machine part or as an object of control rather than presenting a vision as an entertainer,” the 24-year-old singer whose real name is Wu Yifan was quoted as saying.
The singer, who was recruited into the company at the age of 16 in 2007 said that his contract should be annulled because he wasn’t in equal position when negotiating the terms of his contract.

Although there has been no word from the other members yet about Kris leaving, fans are reading into EXO-K Chanyeol’s Instagram post from yesterday.
