There are groups like 2ne1 for example, who have a fierce image. The ‘in your face’ kind of concept and attitude. Their song I Am The Best illustrates exactly that. They aren’t afraid of standing up for themselves and they know they are good at what they do. Sure, they have songs like Lonely and Ugly, but that doesn’t change the fact that they own the fierce concept. Whenever they perform, the stage is on fire. Sure, some members don’t  fit the fierceness concept as well as others, but together it works.

Sophistication is a more subtle way to portray strong women. Arguably the more mature concept of the two, sophistication creates a slick and classy air. The members of Miss A have the sophistication concept down to a ‘t’. They are elegant, mature and sensual, without it being over the top. Their music video for Goodbye Baby is a good example of this:

Of course, there are many other groups and solo singers who fit either concept to some degree. There are many ways to portray fierceness as there are many ways to portray sophistication. Some groups and singers hover in between, or switch it up. Which portrayal of strong women in Kpop attracts you the most? Who do you think fits the ‘strong woman’ concept best?
