By  |

April, and a Flower is finally out and blooming! As it soars to the charts, Chen opens up about the ups and downs of producing his first solo album.

April, and a Flower is taking over the music charts! Chen has soared to the top of international iTunes charts, debuted on major Chinese music charts such as QQ Music, KuGou Music, and Kuwo’s Digital Album Sales Chart. “Beautiful Goodbye” even landed on top of seven music charts in South Korea, such as Melon, Genie Music, Bugs, Soribada, Olleh Music, Momople, and Naver Music.

After the release of his debut album, Chen held a debut showcase where he opened up about the creative process behind his album! Alongside MC and fellow EXO member Xiumin, the singer delved into his creative process behind April, and a Flower at the SMTOWN Coex Artium.

Chen opened up about his initial apprehensions when he began conceptualizing his solo album. “I have been producing music for OSTs, in addition to EXO’s music,” the singer notes, “But this time, it seemed a bit hard for me to create music with my own voice.” Eventually, Chen looked back at his shortcomings and made up for them by “working like crazy”– as Xiumin put it.

To overcome his apprehensions, Chen noted that he needed a lot of faith in himself. “I thought I was lacking in my talents, but I took my first steps with courage, and I began working on my solo album.” From the very start, Chen had put in his heart and effort into producing April, and a Flower.

After recording all of his songs, Chen admitted that he initially had a hard time picking a title track as well. The singer expressed his satisfaction over the album and the people he had worked with. “I have also been asked to feel the emotion of the songs,” the singer adds, “I can feel that the album’s charm is slightly different from my own.”

Finally, Chen revealed that he did not lip-sync in the music video for “Beautiful Goodbye”! “I did not want to convey my feelings through lip-syncing, so I really sang the song directly.” The singer also noted that this was his first time shooting a ballad outdoors, spending six hours outside shooting with pianists and choreographers.

Hear Chen perform his solo songs on music shows this week! He will be making his music show debut on KBS’ Music Bank on April 5. He will also be performing on MBC Show! on April 6, and serenade fans on SBS’ Inkigayo on April 7. Additionally, Chen will also be gracing Kim Shin-young’s Hope Song at Noon.
