Apink: How to Stay Cool? Just Smile!
One of Southeast Asia’s biggest and most highly anticipated music events, MTV World Stage Live in Malaysia, is back for its seventh year on September 12th, 2015 at Sunway Lagoon’s Surf Beach! This year’s stellar artist lineup includes Stacy (Malaysia’s #MostWanted Act), Apink, SEKAI NO OWARI, Carly Rae Jepsen and Jason Derulo.
Prior to the concert, hellokpop was invited to the press conferences for the artists – read on to find out what they divulged to the media.
Chosen as 2015’s Korean Act, Apink’s Chorong, Bomi, Eunji, Naeun, Namjoo and Hayoung arrived dressed in matching lovely, classy white outfits and heels, that reflected the group’s innocent and bright charms well.
Apink also made an equally adorable entrance, when Hayoung arrived a moment later than the rest of her members, and upon entering the venue, quickly hopped on stage to perform the group’s greeting, eliciting smiles from the crowd at her cute movements.
How do you feel being here in Malaysia for World Stage this year?
Chorong: We feel very honored being here, and it has been a while since we came back (to Malaysia), and we are happy that we are able to meet our fans again.
Are there any artists that Apink would like to collaborate with, aside from artists from the group’s ACube family?
Eunji: I like hip-hop, so hopefully I could collaborate with Dynamic Duo!
Apink has ventured into acting, hosting, et cetera. What other talents do the members have that you wish to show to fans?
Eunji: As opposed to special abilities or skills, we feel that we want to perfect our performances on stage for our fans first!
What is it like to perform to an audience that speaks a very different language than you?
Hayoung: Korean is not a language that everyone understands, but if we are able to overcome the language barrier and have fun together with the fans, that’s the most important thing!
Bomi performed the drums during Apink’s concert in Korea – are there any other members that plan to perform with instruments in the near future?
Bomi: Just like how I prepared for the drums for our concert, for future performances the other members will also prepare with instruments for the fans as well!
What is Apink’s feeling of coming to Malaysia to perform at the MTV World Stage for the very first time?
Namjoo: We are very honored to represent Korea, and also to share the stage with so many other famous international artists today.
How do you think that performing at MTV World Stage will impact Apink positively?
Eunji: It will help broaden our experience, especially on stage with all the international artists. We will use this opportunity to strengthen and enhance our future performances.
Has Apink tried any Malaysian food? If yes, what are your favorites?
Chorong: We haven’t really tried a lot of Malaysian food yet, but we had satay! We would like to try nasi lemak too.
If Apink was given a chance to talk to any other performers in the world, who would it be and why?
Naeun: There are so many artists we want to talk to, but since we are here today, I would like to talk to Carly Rae Jepsen!
Chorong: I’m actually a big fan of Jason Derulo and his songs, so I hope I’m able to meet him later and have a small chit-chat with him!
Which member is the best at giving advices or being a sister-like figure to the group?
Bomi: We usually rely on each other and we are all equal in the group, but if we had to pick, it’ll definitely be our leader, Chorong! She leads us through tough times well.
Malaysia is always hot and Apink is always looking cool – do you have any advice to Malaysians on how to look cool?
Bomi: Smile! The best way is just to smile and it makes you feel very cool.
This is Apink’s second time in Malaysia – Does Apink know any Malaysian celebrities or like any of them?
Chorong: Even though this is our second time here, we are still trying to learn about the Malaysian entertainment scene. Hopefully our fans can share about the culture with us!
Besides the other girl groups that exist in the K-pop scene nowadays, what does Apink have that makes the group stand out?
Chorong: Overall, Korean girl groups are doing very well! However, what is important to us is that we keep our genre of music and style. We think that is what keeps Apink there.
Pink Pandas have been waiting for Apink to come to Malaysia for a long time – so what are Pink Pandas to Apink?
Eunji: It’s our dream to stand on stage and perform, but our fans give us a lot of encouragement and support during our performances. It lifts our spirits up.
Korean groups either consist of all male or all female members – what do you think about mixed groups and would Apink consider having a male member in the group?
Apink: Our fans are actually quite picky about who we collaborate with, so we most probably would prefer a featuring artist in our next album rather than have a new member join the group!
Some of the members like Chorong, Eunji and Hayoung have written lyrics for some Apink’s songs – what are the inspirations for writing these lyrics?
Eunji: We write the songs based on our daily lives, and sometimes it’s because of the movies and Korean dramas we watch. They are often filled with so much emotion and we gain inspiration to write from these places.
What’s Apink like on schedule-free day?
Naeun: We watch movies, exercise, and catch up on our sleep! We rest a lot.
In April 2016, Apink will turn 5 years old! What are Apink’s biggest achievements so far as an idol group and where do you see yourself in another 5 years?
Chorong: It’s hard to really specify what is our biggest achievement is, but in 5 years’ time we hope that we are still able to stand on stage together and perform for our fans.
Ending on that heartfelt note, Apink also expressed their interest in not just meeting their Malaysia fans, but Pink Pandas all across Asia as well in the near future. After a photo op session, the girls said their goodbyes, leaving to prepare for the night’s event.
Meanwhile, J-pop band SEKAI NO OWARI took the stage right after in their unique and cool Clockwork Orange inspired outfits. Describing themselves with words like fancy, dorky, childhood friends and Starlight, members Nakajin, Fukase, Saori and DJ LOVE were nervous yet excited to play for their Malaysian fans on MTV World Stage, revealing that they had prepared a lot of English songs on their setlist for the concert.
The band’s songs, ANTI-HERO and SOS are currently receiving a lot of love and attention, as the theme songs to the live film adaptation of the popular Attack on Titan series.
Looking gorgeous in a flowy dress, International Act and Grammy Award winning singer Carly Rae Jepsen was bright and brimming with energy during her session. The pop starlet revealed that Malaysia inspired her to write new songs, and also discussed about the emotional maturity of her music in E.MO.TION, as well as having Tom Hanks star in her music video for I Really Like You. She also expressed interest in writing songs for a male artiste in the future, hoping to explore a different perspective to the songs that she would usually write as well.
R&B recording artist and International Act Jason Derulo, decked in a casual all-black outfit, also greeted the crowd with huge smiles, and he was certainly a charismatic force to be reckoned with! When asked to describe himself in 5 words, his cool reply of “I Am The Sh*t, Man!” had everyone present in stitches. Jason also revealed that the sound of his name being played at the beginning of most of his songs actually did not carry any specific meaning, and he was unaware that it has become a form of trademark for his music.
The show will premiere on MTV in Asia on Saturday, 26 September at 1.30pm (TH/WIB), 2.30pm (PH/SG) and 3.30pm (MY), Saturday, 10 October at 9pm (JP) and Sunday, 11 October at 12am (KR).
