[EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW] Meet Lapillus: A Sensational Rookie Girl Group With Endless Talents and Charms

Lapillus, a six-member rookie girl group under MLD Entertainment, made its first impression on the K-Pop industry on June 20, 2022, with the release of its debut digital single, “Hit Ya!”

Consisting of Chanty, Shana, Yue, Bessie, Seowon, and Haeun, this multinational group, is hailed as the jewel of K-Pop for its colorful concepts, reverse charms, and unique musicality. With strong vocals and powerful dance skills, Lapillus is a group worth watching.

The girls of Lapillus have already taken the industry by storm, grabbing awards at both the 2022 Asia Artist Awards and the 2023 Seoul Music Awards. In particular, the group has caught the attention of Latin American artists for their TikTok videos and performance covers of Natti Natasha, El Alfa, and Chimbala, to name a few.

Ahead of their milestone trip to Latin America, Lapillus spoke to Hellokpop to tease what fans can look forward to during their promotions, discuss how they’ve grown since debuting in June 2022, and their goals for 2023 and beyond.

Hellokpop (HKP): Hello, Lapillus! Thank you for taking the time to speak to Hellokpop. Please introduce yourself to our readers.

Lapillus (Shana, Bessie, Yue, Seowon, and Haeun): Seven, Eight. Show it off! Hello, we are Lapillus!

HKP: Congratulations on your upcoming Latin American promotions! This is the first time you’ll greet your Latin American fans face-to-face. What excites you most about these upcoming promotions?

Lapillus (Bessie): I am looking forward to the award show (Premios Los Nuestro 2023), we are going to attend here in Miami.

Lapillus (Seowon): I am eager for the fan meeting that is going to very happen very soon.

Lapillus (Yue): It’s our first fan meeting here in America, so we are super excited about that.

HKP: I saw that you just arrived in Miami. Can you share any memorable moments you’ve had so far?

Lapillus (Shana): It’s my first time flying to America, so I had a lot of fun watching the movies on the airplane.

Lapillus (Yue): We had a little bit of free time yesterday, so Bessie and I went shopping. It’s my first time going around Miami, so it was super fun seeing the difference between Florida and my hometown in California. It was also fun for Bessie to see the kind of stores here in America.

HKP: Can you provide any spoilers of what fans can look forward to during your LATAM promotions or your fan meeting in Miami?

Lapillus (Yue): We’re going to be performing a lot of our songs during our fan meet, so we are really excited about that. We hope that we can see a lot of Lapis, especially American Lapis, at the fan meet.

HKP: What will you be doing at the award show, Premios Los Nuestro 2023?

Lapillus (Yue): We will be attending the red carpet. We hope our fans look forward to it because we will be wearing really pretty outfits.

HKP: Fans have noticed that you are all working hard to learn Spanish. Do you have a favorite phrase that you’ve learned so far?

Lapillus (Bessie): Carne (meat)!

Lapillus (Shana): Me gusta: puedo mas bailar (I like: I can dance more). Quiero comprar carne (I want to buy meat).

Present + Future

HKP: In what ways do you think you have grown since your debut?

Lapillus (Shana): I believe that we really improved performance-wise since our debut.

HKP: Is there a goal that you’d like to achieve this year?

Lapillus (Yue): We have a few. We hope to release new music and more albums. We would love to do a collaboration in the future. We want to meet more fans around the world.

HKP: Is there a dream collaboration or collaborator?

Lapillus (Yue): Anyone. I feel like any pop artist would be awesome. We sing a lot in Korean, but we haven’t sung any songs completely in English, so in the future, if we are able to collaborate with someone, we hope it’s a pop artist so we can sing a song in English.

HKP: Is there a genre or concept you want to try in the future?

Lapillus (Seowon): Right now, we have a strong concept, like the teen crush concept. In the future, I’d like to try something pretty or soft. Think “Born With Love,” but softer and prettier.

HKP: What song is your favorite to perform?

Lapillus (Bessie): All of them.

Lapillus (Yue): “Burn with Love” because we don’t get to perform it very often, and we’ve heard from our fans that it’s one of their favorites.

HKP: For new fans, which Lapillus song would you recommend?

Lapillus (Bessie): “Queendom!” It’s so cool.

Lapillus (Yue): I would recommend “Queendom” too because I want to tell our fans to create their Queendom and feel confident in themselves as well.

About the Members

HKP: What would you say is the best part of being a member of Lapillus?

Lapillus (Bessie): The good thing about being a member of Lapillus is that we get to do a lot of amazing performances. That’s kind of a strong point of Lapillus as well.

Lapillus (Yue): I think a fun part of being a member of Lapillus is that we are so international and can really connect with international fans. When we do go to different countries, we can communicate there. Each member has their own country they are in charge of, meaning they are in charge of doing the most speaking there. For example, in Japan, Shana is the one in charge of speaking a lot, or if we go to the Philippines, Chanty is the one in charge of speaking. So I think that’s a really great part of being a member of Lapillus.

Lapillus (Yue): I agree with that because when we first debuted, we were really nervous before going on stage and would make small mistakes because of that. However, now before we go on stage, we feel super comfortable, and it’s not as nerve-wracking as before.

HKP: In three words, how would you describe Lapillus?

Lapillus (Bessie): Reverse charm, cool, and pretty

Lapillus (Haeun): Performance, diamonds, and teen crush

Lapillus (Yue): International, colorful, and diverse

Lapillus (Shana): Comfortable, young, and bright

Lapillus (Seowon): Diversity in language, unique, and different,

HKP: Bessie, you mentioned reverse charm. Can you tell us what the Lapillus members’ charms are?

Lapillus (Bessie of Haeun): Haeun’s charm is that she is a cutie.

Lapillus (Bessie of Yue): Yue is gorgeous.

Lapillus (Bessie of Shana): Shana has the reverse charm when she goes on stage. Usually, when we’re not performing, Shana has that cute older sister vibe. Then when we perform on stage, she gets super serious and has the reverse charm (duality).

Lapillus (Bessie of Seowon): Seowon is good at every concept. She can be really pretty when we’re doing more elegant concepts, but she can also look super cool when we’re doing strong concepts.

Lapillus (Bessie): The charm of Lapillus as a whole is that we are really compatible with each other.

HKP: Do you have a message you’d like to say to your Latin America Lapis?

Lapillus (Yue): To all of our fans around the world, thank you for supporting us. Please wait for us – we hope to come to your country soon in the future. We will be working even hard to produce better songs and better albums. We will be creating more content in the so please look forward to that. We love you all so much!
