2017 has been a dynamic yet turbulent eventful year in the Korean entertainment world as we see many ups and downs, including those heartbroken and mournful moments.
As we are counting down to the final remaining hours of 2017, here’s a recap of the 10 top trending news in HelloKpop this year (in no particular order) where we could reflect on what has happened, move on, and look forward for a brand new exciting 2018.
1. Wedding Of The Century – Song Joong Ki & Song Hye Hyo
Termed as the “wedding of the century”, it is with no doubt that the nuptial between Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo was one of the top trending news in the Korean entertainment world, smashing mainstream headlines worldwide daily since the sudden announcement of their relationship on 5 July 2017 to their big day on 31 October 2017. The two, who played the lead roles in the hit drama Descendants of the Sun, had been embroiled in several dating rumors before they officially confirmed their romantic involvement on 5 July 2017.
2. The Downfall Of Pirate Site Kissasian.com
Kissasian.com had been a popular streaming site of shows for Korean lovers from various countries such as Korea, China, Hong Kong, The Philippines, and even North Korea until February 2017. The site then faced trademark and copyright infringement from a leading broadcasting network in the Philippines. At time of writing, the site is now shut down for good. However, this news has raised serious concerns on pirate sites that offer free K-drama downloads or streaming contents, especially such sites potentially contain viruses or malware that steal personal data.
3. Gary Got Married But Not with Song Ji Hyo
When Gary decided to post a photo on his Instagram to announce that he was already married with his non-celebrity girlfriend, fans of Monday Couple and Running Man were shocked as they had always been shipping him and Song Ji Hyo until then.
4. Dating & Breakup Of K-drama couple Nam Joo Hyuk & Lee Sung Kyung
From close friends to colleagues, then from K-drama couple to real life couple. It was like a dream come true for Weightlifting Fairy fans when the lead K-drama couple that they shipped became a couple in reality. The news broke out on 24 April 2017 after a local news outlet released several intimate photos of them, which their agency YG Entertainment later also announced their relationship on the same day. The love story of Lee Sung Kyung and Nam Joo Hyuk, however, was short-lived when they were confirmed to have broken up on 18 August 2017.
5. Song Joong Ki Caught Smoking And Fans Got Worried
Four days after the Korean film The Battleship Island starring Song Joong Ki, So Ji Sub and Hwang Jung Min premiered, Director Ryoo Seung-wan revealed a photo of the three main actors smoking together at a terrace, which expressed they might have suffered from tremendous stress regarding the anticipated performance of the box office. Having seen the photo, fans couldn’t help but got worried for Song Joong Ki’s health.
6. BgA Slayed BTS, GOT7, MONSTA X On iTunes Chart
If you have no idea who BgA is, you are forgiven, as this “K-pop” group isn’t the conventional type that everyone else knows. When BgA released their second single on 25 March 2017, they actually beat BTS, GOT7 and MONSTA X on the iTunes chart within one hour. If you are not taking them seriously, well, now you should, if they ever make a comeback.
7. “The Best Gift” From Rain To Kim Tae Hee
2017 began on a happy note with the wedding of Korea’s celebrity couple Rain and Kim Tae Hee on 19 January 2017. After releasing “The Best Gift” on January 15 on January 17, Rain surprised fans when he uploaded a handwritten note on his Instagram to announce his upcoming wedding with Kim.
8. Twitter And Wikipedia Took The Wrath From Netizens Because Samuel “Deserves Better”
After the second season of Produce 101 confirmed its line-up of members for a new project boy group Wanna One, netizens expressed disappointment after learning Brave Entertainment’s Kim Samuel failed to make it to the final Top 11 ranking. They took it up on Twitter and Wikipedia to express frustrations on the outcome.
9. The Buzz Of Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018
Come February 2018, South Korea will be hosting the Olympic Winter Games for the very first time in history, also the second Olympic Games after the Seoul Olympic Games in 1988. As this is an important and significant event in the country, the excitement has been rapidly increasing in 2017 as more honorary ambassadors from the K-entertainment world were announced, namely BIGBANG’s Taeyang, Girl’s Day, not forgetting the torchbearers VIXX’s Leo and N, and many other celebratory events involving top K-pop idols.
10. The Death Of SHINee’s Jonghyun
Sadly, 2017 has to end unexpectedly with one of the biggest and devastating losses to the K-pop world, with many fans still fighting hard to accept the reality to this day.
On December 18, SHINee’s Jonghyun was found unconscious at a rented apartment in Cheongdam-dong with the coal briquette burning, which is known as a common suicidal method due to carbon monoxide poisoning. He was rushed to a hospital in a state of cardiac arrest but was later pronounced dead. His death has not only shaken the K-pop community but the whole world as fans in many countries held memorials to remember him. Jonghyun has already brought a whole new level of awareness on depression, prompting fans to call on all entertainment agencies to provide mental health support to Korean idols.
It might have been a fulfilling 2017 for some while draining for others, but still, it’s through each year of experiences that we mature and become a better person. And that’s how Korean entertainment world has been through for the past decades.
