The Plot’s Rough Sketch
18 Again is the K-drama remake of Zac Efron’s movie, 17 Again. It tells the story of married couple Jung Da Jung (Kim Ha Neul) and Hong Dae Young (Yoon Sang Hyun/ Lee Do Hyun) who are on the brink of getting divorced.
Jung Da Jung and Hong Dae Young’s love story is not something that lies on a bed roses.
Forced to start their own family of four at an early age, Da Jung and Dae Young’s careers and dreams have taken a back seat.
Once a basketball varsity star player, Dae Young left behind his promising career when he has chosen to take responsibility of Da Jung and her pregnancy. As it turns out, Da Jung are to have twins – Hong Si Ah (No Jeong Eui) and Hong Si Woo (Ryeo Un).
Amid familial love, Da Jung and Dae Young’s juvenile relationship then becomes filled with regrets, life’s hardships and unmet dreams.
18 Again then narrates Da Jung and Dae Young’s efforts to claim their second chances in love and in life with Dae Young literally being able to live in his past self.
There are many facets to 18 Again’s story but its portrayal of young love between Da Jung and Dae Young gives off a sweet balance amid its realistic portrayal of the couple’s hardships.
Snippets of flashbacks during Da Jung and Dae Young’s heydays at school provide refreshing break from their troubles as a married couple.
(And rightfully so, as we think Dae Young will find the clarity and respite as he lives as his 17-year old self.)
Lee Do Hyun’s Portrayal of a Young Father
Surprisingly, the young Lee Do Hyun has more scenes portraying Dae Young than Yoon Sang Hyun.
And, Lee Do Hyun does not disappoint at all. His character is able to express heartfelt emotions as a young father. As he relives his old self, he gets the front seat to see his family’s regrets and resentment unfold right before his eyes.
Kang Ha Neul as a Mom Pursuing Her Dream
Jung Da Jung’s character provides a breath of hope as she continues to pursue her dreams despite all of her struggles as a young mom.
Da Jung is someone who is able to put behind all her regrets and able to move forward with her life – by herself, at her own pace.
18 Again is a heartwarming drama with inspiring acting from its lead characters. Go Back Couple‘s Director Ha Byung Hoon is surely living up to his promise of deep emotions and realistic portrayal o of relationships in this new drama.
We cannot wait to see how the story will further unfold especially for Hong Dae Young.
