Han Suk Kyu Returns with Heartfelt Passion in tvN’s “New CEO Project”

Veteran actor Han Suk-kyu is back on the small screen, describing his latest work, The New CEO Project, as “a project I’ve poured my whole heart into.” The drama’s online press conference was held on September 8, attended by director Shin Kyung-soo and cast members Han Suk-kyu, Bae Hyun-sung, and Lee Re.

The upcoming tvN Monday-Tuesday drama, The New CEO Project, is a conflict-resolution hero story centered on a mysterious man known as the “new CEO” — a former legendary negotiator who now runs a humble chicken restaurant in a quiet alley. Behind his friendly exterior, however, lies a man of action who steps in whenever an incident occurs, moving between legal and unconventional means to deliver justice.

Han Suk-kyu, who most recently starred in Dr. Romantic 3 and This Intimate Traitor, takes on the titular role of the enigmatic restaurant owner. He shared his thoughts on the role, saying, “This time, my character has the most humble profession I’ve ever portrayed — a chicken restaurant owner. The difference is huge from my previous characters, who were professionals like intelligence agents or police officers. But the CEO’s background is actually more impressive than anyone’s. The drama tells the story of how such a person came to live this quiet life.”

Alongside Han, Bae Hyun-sung plays Jo Philip, a brilliant and witty law student who is on track to become a chief judge. Bae revealed his preparation for the role: “I wanted to portray professionalism in my legal scenes, so I attended a court observation class and even received advice from a lawyer. Since my character works closely with the CEO, I also wanted to show Philip’s flexible and human side.”

Lee Re takes on the role of Lee Si-on, a sharp and resourceful MZ-generation part-timer and delivery worker. The actress noted similarities between herself and her character, saying, “Like Si-on, I started working early and developed a sense of professionalism. I relate to her moments of intense focus when she helps the CEO while also pursuing her own goals.”

When asked about their chemistry, Han Suk-kyu showed his trademark humor and warmth. “I watched Hyun-sung in Prefabricated Family and thought he did well, especially with his dialect. But I have to say, he shouldn’t be cutting cabbage in the kitchen — it was about two centimeters thick,” he joked, drawing laughter. He also praised Lee Re’s dedication: “I was amazed when I saw her ride a motorcycle and even more impressed during our action scenes together. She passed the ‘delivery test’ with flying colors.”

Bae Hyun-sung expressed his admiration for the senior actor, saying, “It’s an honor. I always hoped to work with Han Suk-kyu someday, and I’m grateful that it happened through this project.” Lee Re added, “I was really nervous at first because he’s such a respected senior. But he made me feel comfortable before filming — he even asked me what my favorite song was and what I had eaten to ease the tension. That made a huge difference.”

Director Shin Kyung-soo explained his approach to storytelling: “Each episode has its own emotional weight, so I wanted the story to flow naturally and sincerely. Rather than using flashy directing techniques, I aimed for a realistic tone that lets the story and actors shine.”

As for what to look forward to, Lee Re teased, “Each episode introduces new characters and cases, making it exciting to see how they’re resolved.” Bae Hyun-sung added, “You’ll feel a sense of thrill and satisfaction as conflicts are resolved, especially watching how three very different personalities come together to solve cases.”

Han Suk-kyu closed by sharing his personal connection to the role: “The new CEO may seem bright and cheerful at first, but he carries many dark and complex emotions. He embodies all of my experiences — the range of emotions I’ve learned and the depth I’ve gained from my seniors. I hope viewers can see those layers in him.”

tvN’s new Monday-Tuesday drama “The New CEO Project” premieres on October 15 at 8:50 PM (KST).
