K-Drama Sneak Peek: Kim Se Jeong And Yeon Woo Jin To Strike A Chord In Mystery-Thriller “I Wanna Hear Your Song”

A mystery thriller with a touch of comedy and romance drama is set to light up our TV screen this August.

I Wanna Hear Your Song (English title) stars Yeon Woo Jin (Priest, Queen for Seven Days) and Gugudan’s Kim Se Jeong (School 2017). It follows the story of a young woman who loses her memory and suffers from insomnia. She meets a man and forms a bond with her as he calls him every night. He will help her, both in her sleeping disorder and in finding out the truth about the night of the murder.

The Main Plot

A young woman, Hong Yi Young, is a timpanist who suffers from insomnia. She can’t seem to recall the events that happened on the day a murder took place. In a bizarre twist of fate, she meets Jang Yoon who is not good at singing but is a pianist in an orchestra. These two embark on a journey to uncover the truth of that fateful night.

The Characters

Kim Se Jeong as Hong Yi Young

Hong Yi Young can’t remember what happened on the night a murder took place. She dreams of becoming a successful timpanist, however, bad luck seems to follow her. Despite her unfortunate circumstance, she remains to have a cheerful personality and smiles through her troubles. Her insomnia is keeping her up at night and so are the nightmares. Her bad dreams could be memories from a tragic past she forgot. She hires Jang Yoon to be her nightly caller to help her with her insomnia and ends up requesting for a lullaby.

Yeon Woo Jin as Jang Yoon

He is a pianist in an orchestra and his excellent piano skills make up for his lack in singing talent. He exudes a mysterious aura. Jang Yoon intentionally approaches Hong Yi Young and befriends her. His calls to Yi Young every night help her deal with her insomnia and bad dreams. He is outspoken and always honest with his feelings. Jang Yoon seems to trigger something in Yi Young’s memory which encourages her to find out what really happened on the night of the murder.

Song Jae Rim as Nam Joo Wan

An orchestra conductor with excellent showmanship and great charisma. He is popular among his peers for his skills and personality, but also known as an issue-maker. He has a straightforward personality and does not fear anything. However, unexpected events start to happen the moment he reunites with Yi Young.

Park Ji Yeon as Ha Eun Joo

A gorgeous and talented violinist. She has a strong personality which people finds fascinating and attractive, though she comes off arrogant. Ha Eun Joo knows Hong Yi Young, but they don’t share a friendly bond. She is confident, smart and has the tendency to want to know everything that is happening around her.

The Production Team

Kim Min Joo, the drama’s scriptwriter, shared on what inspired her to write the story. She also pointed out the things viewers can look forward to while watching I Wanna Hear Your Song.

“The story is about young men and women who find themselves faced with difficulty but somehow discover a way to overcome it and move forward to find love.”

She also revealed her wish for the drama to create a positive impact. As well as inspire young people going through some hard times. “I wrote the drama in hopes that this generation will have the courage to go beyond their ugly pasts and harsh realities and take the step to move forward”, she added.

In response to the drama’s mixed genre she said, “I call it a mystery thriller pretending to be a romantic comedy.”

She also mentioned that she is working hard to ensure to keep the mystery thriller aspects while also giving viewers the rom-com feels. “I want to throw viewers an interesting question at the end of each episode.”

Lastly, she commended the lead stars for their efforts and great acting. “Please look forward to the darkness hidden behind vibrant façade of Kim Se Jeong’s character, as well as Yeon Woo Jin’s singing.”

Lee Jung Mi (Naeil’s Cantabile) directed I Wanna Hear Your Song. The drama will have its first broadcast on August 5 at 10PM KST via KBS2. It will also premiere on KBS World TV the following day (August 6).
