K-Drama Premiere: “Kill It” Thrills On Its Premiere Week With An Enigmatic Lead And High Energy

OCN’s newest thriller drama Kill It is dark and mysterious.

Kill It shrouds the lead character Kim Soo Hyun (Jang Ki Yong) in obscurity. Raised by foreigner Pavel (David McInnis), Soo Hyun grows up to be a trained assassin. He is cold and unfeeling.

During the premiere week, Soo Hyun met police officer Do Hyun Jin. Despite Soo Hyun’s cold exterior, he could not resist spunky Hyun Jin. Eventually, their lives start to intertwine.

Pavel and Soo Hyun: A Family Forced together

Soo Hyun is a solitary figure raised by Pavel. He was trained to be merciless and callous as a child. However, his pure heart still wins sometimes. He refused to kill a dog, instead keeping it as a pet.

17 years later, Soo Hyun is now a ruthless assassin. In one of their conversations, Pavel offers Soo Hyun a photo. He tells him that it might be his family. But Pavel also reveals that Soo Hyun’s father ordered him dead. Soo Hyun refuses to accept that the people in the picture are his family. Instead, he tells Pavel that he is family.

Pavel, showing signs of dementia, refuses to let Soo Hyun take over his targeted kills. Soo Hyun wisely followed Pavel to one of his assignments but was too late. Pavel was fatally injured and eventually died.

Do Hyun Jin: Accurate in Darts and In Life

Do Hyun Jin is a young, high-ranking officer who has a global record in darts. She arrives at the scene of a high-profile murder of Yoon Dae Heon. Hyun Jin meets with the police investigation team to let them know that she thinks it’s not a suicide, but a murder. She cites Hyuk’s notes on previous murders he investigated. All the murderers were killed in the notes she kept.

In a flashback, it’s revealed that the person she referred to, Hyuk, died tragically. Only a small little girl witnessed the murder. Hyun Jin has yet to find that same little girl.

She describes in correct details what she thinks happened in their current investigation. She says that the next part is to find the killer.

Hyun Jin Moves into Soo Hyun’s Neighborhood

Soo Hyun’s veterinary clinic is on the ground floor of high school senior Seul Ki’s building. Seul Ki is actually the witness to Hyuk’s murder that Hyun Jin is looking for.

Hyun Jin moves into the same building where Soo Hyun’s clinic is located. She discovers Seul Ki’s background and finds out she’s a rich orphan running away from relatives who want her money. She questions Soo Hyun about her, but Seul Ki overhears. The police officer upsets Seul Ki for interfering in her life.

Soo Hyun Saves Hyun Jin

Hyun Jin and the rest of the team are undercover. She enters a building in disguise. As she is inside, a woman escapes from Roman Mafia Karimov and asks Hyun Jin to save her. She is stoned and doesn’t know what to do. They discover she is a police officer and tries to knock her unconscious.

Soo Hyun arrives suddenly and lures the men away, allowing Hyun Jin to escape. She follows Karimov to the roof and is about to get shot when Soo Hyun suddenly steps in front of her and gets shot instead.

Premiere Week Afterthoughts

OCN | Kill It

I think that this could be one of Jang Ki Yong’s best dramas yet. Jang seems to do well in mysterious roles. His acting in the premiere week reminds me of his stoic behavior in Come and Hug Me 

Jang speaks English frequently during the first half of the premiere episode, and it’s impressive.  Additionally, his action sequences require a lot of training and practice, but Jang nailed it every time. It’s obvious that he prepared well for this role.

Even though this is her second drama only, Nana can also act her part well. In the drama, she’s the daughter of Do Jae Hwan. He uses her to prevent her mom from going hysterical. Her mother expects her to be perfect and is upset that Hyun Jin chose to be a police officer and not a ballerina.

Overall, the premiere week was exciting and intriguing.  Furthermore, the story was interesting and provided a good narration for the lead characters. Both lead characters were given solid backgrounds and ready to move on. I can’t wait for next week’s developments.

Nicole is currently juggling motherhood, her job, and her immense love for K-dramas and K-pop. On most days, the latter wins.  Sleeping can wait – is her motto as she eagerly devours episodes of her favorite K-dramas. Her absolute favorite drama would be Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo.
