K-Drama Premiere: “Less Than Evil” Introduces A Bad Cop Who Brings Justice To Life

Regardless of his method, the hero in Less Than Evil aims to annihilate crime in the town he is serving as a detective

Shin Ha Kyun’s comeback drama, Less Than Evil, premiered on impressive ratings, and has run down the people who will move in the story.

Presenting a mixture of eccentric and normal characters, MBC’s newest crime drama heralds a prosperous year ahead for the network.

Infamously known for his crude ways, Detective Woo Tae Suk (Shin Ha Kyun) has the highest solved crime turnover rate in the police department he works with.

However, his diligence in his job has been rocking his marriage. Still caught up in an unsolved case 13 years ago, Tae Suk gets another chance to redeem himself with a new case.

Facing a formidable serial killer who is hiding beneath his prosecutor robe is Jang Hyung Min. He enjoys taking his victims’ teeth and other body parts as trophies of his unthinkable atrocity.

By plotting evidence and luring the psychopath to come out of his shell, Tae Suk partly gets redemption but is bothered by Hyung Min’s statement that he does not know where Yeo Wol is. The latter is a witness to a crime who suddenly disappeared after the police failed to keep the end of the bargain.

Refusing to save Hyung Min, the prosecutor falls down from a high platform. He survives but falls into a coma. Resigned to follow his wife’s condition of leaving his job for them to stay married, Tae Suk preps up to end his career. But the police department makes him a hero with promotion on the side to cover up the lapse which happened inside the Prosecutors’ organization, having a serial killer under their wing.

Meanwhile, a new case involving the parents of a peculiar news reporter Eun Sun Jae (Lee Seol) bugs Tae Suk. He knows Sun Jae achieved a perfect crime in killing her parents, but no evidence is available to pin her down.

Tae Suk finally figures out the clue and uses one of Sun Jae’s trophies to levy a confirmation. But he gets the surprise of his life when inside the ash urn of Sun Jae’s pet dog is the name tag of Yeo Wol, the girl he failed to protect 13 years ago.

Pilot Week Afterthoughts

A dose of the hero’s career failure takes the central plot seasoning of Less than Evil. How Tae Suk will live to the reality that the girl he failed to protect became a monster drives an interesting premise.

Detective stories were not as active this year compared to 2017, so in a way, Less Than Evil is on a right timing since its strong presence excites the viewers, who have been mellowed down by the healing drama parade this season.
