The Penthouse: War In Life’s maiden season brought us closer to the dark reality of social divides. This makjang drama resoundingly depicts how the powerful ones prey on those below them through their cunning ways.
As season 1 ended with cliffhangers, the new season braces us for a darker and more vengeful storyline.
Rough Plot Sketch
(Season 1 Spoilers Ahead)
Season 1 ended with the murder of Shim Su Ryeon (Lee Ji Ah) in their luxurious abode in Hera Palace. Falling into Joo Dan Tae’s (Uhm Ki Joon) sinister scheme, Oh Yoon Hee (Eugene) got framed and incriminated as the murderer. Unexpectedly, Logan Lee (Park Eun Seok) came to her rescue and took her into his custody. Yoon Hee later learned that Logan Lee is the adoptive brother of Min Seol A. He is ready to avenge his sister’s death.
From the teaser videos, we can infer that the greedy Cheon Seo Jin (Kim Seo Yeon) is living the life she has always wanted. She reigns supremely as the most celebrated opera singer in the country. And she is about to become the new wife of the very powerful Joo Dan Tae.
Everything seems to fall into place until Yoon Hee, her longtime rival, suddenly reappears out of nowhere. Now bolder and feistier, Yoon Hee vows to expose Seo Jin’s fabricated truths that have helped her get away with all her wicked deeds.
On a lighter note, second-generation characters Joo Seok Hoon (Kim Young Dae) and Bae Ro Na (Kim Hyun Soo) will take their budding romance to the next level. But living worlds apart, their relationship would have to endure outward threats.
Eugene as Oh Yoon Hee
Oh Yoon Hee has lived through countless setbacks both as a victim of unfair circumstances and her poor decisions in life. After getting robbed of the award she deserved in a prestigious singing contest, she gave up her dream of pursuing a career as an opera singer. Her daughter Bae Ro Na, who is also a gifted singer, reminds her of her young passionate self.
Yoon Hee returns and aims for Cheon Seo Jin’s downfall, the woman who stole what was rightfully hers.
Kim Seo Yeon as Cheon Seo Jin
Hera Palace’s primadonna resident, Cheon Seo Jin gets whatever she wants with her social status. And she doesn’t mind if it belongs to someone else. Her extramarital affair with Chairman Joo Dan Tae led to a string of vicious events in Hera Palace.
Uhm Ki Joon as Joo Dan Tae
Greedy and merciless, Joo Dan Tae does not mind getting blood on his hands if something gets in the way of his plans. He takes care of everything with his money. He intentionally killed his wife, Shim Su Ryeon, but walks scot-free from the crime.
Park Eun Seok as Logan Lee/ Gu Ho Dong
Logan Lee is Min Seol A’s adoptive brother. Seeking retribution for the unjust death of his sister, he pretended to get into a significant business deal as a ploy to trap one of the culprits, Joo Dan Tae.
He also hid under the guise of Gu Ho Dong, a P.E. teacher in Cheong Ah High School, the premier school where Seol A’s bullies go to study.
Kim Hyun Soo as Bae Ro Na
Armed with talent and idealism, Ro Na chose to take the same path her mother used to walk on. If the world was fair, she would have trumped everyone easily with her gift of singing. Unfortunately, she has to play by the rules set by the few powerful ones.
The Creative Team
PD Dong Min Joo returns as the director of the drama’s second season. Writer Kim Soon Ok will once again put her hands on the flow of the story.
Penthouse 2 will premiere on February 19 on the SBS channel. It is also available for streaming via Viu.
