The Main Plot
Set in the background of early 19th century, Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung reels interest with its woman-empowering premise. The period drama threads on the struggle of female historians who face bias treatment in the society where Confucianism is deeply-rooted.
Challenging his first period drama, idol-actor Cha Eun Woo portrays the role of Prince Yi Rim. Sheltered as the second in line to the throne, the distant prince only knows love by theory. When he dons his other life outside the palace, he is interestingly a popular romance novelist. While he is celebrated in the city, he adorably worries about his works, that he often needs public approval leading him to personally check on the readers’ reactions.
In one of his “other life” adventure he chances upon Goo Hae Ryung (Shin Se Kyung) who will make his life outside the palace eventful. From a chance encounter their connection will bloom to love. Image teasers of their first meeting shows Cha’s character meeting Shin at a book store. Scanning the place, Prince Yi Rim approaches Hae Ryung to ask her opinion about the book.

The Lead Love Couple
Taking the female lead is Shin Se Kyung, who will play the role of Goo Hae Ryung. This drama marks Shin’s third period series after acclaimed productions Tree With Deep Roots and Six Flying Dragons.
A daughter from a noble household, Hae Ryung questions the lack of open-mindedness in her country. Having been drawn to Western civilization, she is set to pioneer a new face of a Joseon woman.
Growing up disconnected from the world, Prince Yi Rim is lonely albeit his second in the line to the throne status. The only way he communicates to the world is through writing.
Using his pen name, Maehwa, he scribbles love stories passionately, even when he only knows it in theory. Depicting his two lives, Cha Eun Woo shows his prince and novelist personas.
Additional Main Cast members
Versatile actor Park Ki Woong takes the role of Prince Jin Sung, who earnestly wants the best for the Kingdom. Constantly on an opposing stand with the ministers, he defends his brother, the women and Joseon people.
Particularly, he is is a warm and friendly to his younger brother Prince Yi Rim. His contrasting photos of stern-looking and brightly-smiling prince adds another depth to the cast roster.
Rounding up the main cast are actors Lee Ji Hoon and Park Ji Hyun. Pictured as an upright person, Lee’s role as Min Woo Won keeps his principles and convictions. Aiming to be an instrument to have a better world, he works on his own not depending on the high government position of his father.
Meanwhile, Park Ji Hyun exudes determination, although hidden in her serene eyes. Resolute not to live as a flower in a society whose women’s roles primarily are that of homemakers, she moves forward to live a life that she wants to lead.

Following hit series produced by Chorokbaem Media, Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung aims another historical drama treat from MBC. The production company worked on dramas Memories of the Alhambra, Another Miss Oh, Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo and W among others.
Director Kang Il Soo and writer Han Hyun Hee worked on youth drama Solomon’s Perjury. The former also orchestrated Jeon Woo Chi and The Kingdom of the Winds to name a few.
