Discover Traditional Beauty Of The Korean Folk Village

By  |

It’s just another day in the Korean Folk Village.

Located in Gyeonggi province with some distance away from the city centre, this folk village is home to some 260 traditional houses reminiscent of the Joseon Dynasty. An actor-beggar with unkempt hair and dressed in dirty garbs greeted us as we entered the village, calling out for some spare cash.

Nearby, a cow masticated on its food, giving the school children on a field trip going by vacant stares. It felt like we had gone back in time.

In one hut, an old man sat shaving the wood pieces in his hands. With no modern lathe to cut, sand, drill the wood, he crafted combs, spoons and other small objects with his own hands and assistance of small tools. Also, woven baskets were laid out on the floor of the hut, and all were up for sale. With the inception of mass production, machines and factories, such knickknacks might not seem worth the time and effort spent crafting by hand, but the old man worked hard at them anyway, detached from the hustle and bustle of city life here in this village.

Attracted by the hordes of schoolchildren going by, guided by their teachers who told them to hurry up so as not to miss the performances, we trailed behind them. From 10:30am onwards, there were performances ranging from Farmers Music and Dance, Acrobatics on a Tightrope, Traditional Wedding, Equestrian Feats, and Gugak B-boy performances at the designated performance area.  It was a colourful affair; full of folk music and traditional costumes.

Among the many performers who played drums, danced traditional dances, did shows with horses, tightrope walker Son Sang Eun caught our attention. Having witnessed his calm demeanor throughout the performance, even as he performed before the audience of at least 300 people with mostly school children on school trips, one cannot help but be amazed.
