Many K-Pop artists had made it big internationally this 2019 – especially in the US.
The Korea Creative Content Agency’s US Business Center announced the results of the “K-Content US Market Consumer Trend Survey” they recently conducted to see the feedback of US residents on various Korean entertainment contents!
Running for three months from July to September 2019, the trend survey was conducted online. It was also divided into three categories: K-Pop, drama, and entertainment. For K-Pop, KCCA noted which artists and songs had won over the American audience this year.
Placing first is BTS, whose current popularity in the US is undoubtable. Not only do they dominate various American music charts, but they have also become the first Korean artist to hold a solo concert at a stadium in the United States with their Love Yourself tour this year.
Taking the second spot is ATEEZ – an impressive feat for a rookie group who has proven their worldwide power by already finishing one huge world tour shortly after their debut, and is even set to embark on their next for the early part of 2020.
Completing the top three is EXO who had scored various number ones on numerous categories of music charts in the US. In fact, among all artists on Billboard’s World Digital Songs chart, the boy group have the second-most career entries on the chart ever.
Their junior labelmates NCT took the fourth spot, with great contributions from its sub-unit NCT 127 who had been actively conducting activities in the US this 2019. The unit is also the first-ever K-Pop artist to perform at the famous Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
MONSTA X then rounded up the top five after showing steady growth worldwide, including the US, for the past few years with their world tours, music festival appearances, international TV show guestings, and more. They have also released various English singles throughout 2019 which further gathered more American fans and attention from American media.
SEVENTEEN followed up on the sixth spot, thanks to their growing fanbase in the US further proven by their remarkable presence in American music charts. The same goes for BLACKPINK and TWICE, who showed girl power by placing back-to-back on the seventh and eighth spots.
Additionally, GOT7 owned the ninth spot on the list after storming the American music scene with their activities throughout the year. Lastly, LOONA, who showed a strong presence on American music charts during 2019, claimed the tenth spot to close the list.
Moreover, KCCA revealed which K-Pop songs were hailed as favourites by Americans, with the number one being BTS’ “Boy With Luv”, followed by TWICE’s “FANCY”, BLACKPINK’s “Kill This Love”, BTS’ “Home”, and ITZY’s “ICY” ranked in order.
The company also noted that the platform fans use to listen to music is changing little by little. While YouTube still accounted for 44.2% of the main music platform where fans listen to, the number of music streaming services and paid downloads increased significantly. In fact, Spotify, which had 10.1% last year, obtained 27.4% this year, and Apple Music, which was 8.4% last year, became 12.7% this year.
The survey was conducted through an online survey of 3,303, 2097, and 809 US residents who had been exposed to K-Pop, Korean drama, and entertainment, respectively. For all sectors, KCCA shared that the data confidence level is 99%, with the sampling error for K-Pop being ± 2.24%.
