From Gong Yoo to Kim Soo Hyun, these Filipino actors were cast as the local versions of your favorite Korean actors’ drama characters in the Philippines.
The Philippines has been importing Korean dramas since 2003 through local networks GMA, ABS-CBN, TV5, and even government-controlled channel PTV.
Aside from localizing the dramas by means of dubbing, local networks have expanded the localization of a number of dramas by remaking them and adding flavors suitable to the Philippine palate. At present, there are a total of 16 dramas remade whose original versions were also aired on local television.
A rumored remake of the hit Korean dramas Descendants of the Sun and Boys Over Flowers are also reportedly on the way. The buzz has been on since last year about Filipino actor Alden Richards becoming the Philippines’ Captain Yoo Si Jin.
Still, before Richards officially (if true) takes on the duty to be Big Boss, let us look back on the previous local adaptations and the Filipino actors who took on the pressure and burden to follow in the footsteps of top Korean actors including Gong Yoo, Hyun Bin, Won Bin, and more.

1. Gerald Anderson
Filipino-American film and television actor Gerald Anderson played the Filipino counterpart of Lee Dong Wook’s My Girl character, Seol Gong Chan, in the 2008 remake of the 2005 hit Korean drama. Anderson’s character was named Julian Abueva.
For the local remake of My Girl, he teamed up with Chinese-Filipino actress Kim Chiu who played Jasmine Estopacio, the counterpart of Lee Da Hae’s Joo Yoo Rin.
The remake was positively received by the Philippine viewing public. It was aired on ABS-CBN, becoming the network’s number one show and the fourth top show in Mega Manila during its 75-episode run from may 26 to September 5, 2008.
Who is Gerald Anderson?
Anderson started his television career as the Third Big Placer in the first season of reality show Pinoy Big Brother: Teen Edition in 2006. Since then, he had acted in several television dramas and movies with his latest project being a collaboration with 2015 Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach, entitled My Perfect You.
2. Mark Anthony Fernandez
Filipino actor Mark Anthony Fernandez played the well-loved role of Hyun Bin in the 2008 Philippine version of the 2005 hit Korean drama, My Name is Kim Sam Soon. Fernandez took on the role of Cyrus Ruiz, the counterpart of Hyun Bin’s Hyun Jin Heon.
Titled Ako si Kim Sam Soon, the remake paired up Fernandez with Asia Songbird Regine Velasquez as Kim Sam Soon Buot. It was broadcast from June 30 to October 10, 2008, with its premiere and final episode securing high ratings at 33.8 percent and 38.2 percent, respectively.
Who is Mark Anthony Fernandez?
Well-known in the local entertainment scene as the son of late Filipino actor Rudy Fernandez and actress Alma Moreno, Fernandez was a member of the then-teen group Gwapings in the 1990s. He has starred in various roles and projects both in films and television.
In 2016, he was arrested for marijuana possession and was detained for more than a year until his release in December 2017. He has since returned to television via FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano.
3. Dingdong Dantes
In 2009, GMA produced the Philippine remake of Stairway to Heaven. It starred Filipino actor Dingdong Dantes, who is dubbed as the network’s Primetime King, as Pocholo “Cholo” Fuentebella, the local version of Kwon Sang Woo’s Cha Song Joo.
Moreover, Dantes once again participated in another remake of a Korean drama via GMA in 2010 through Endless Love, the Philippine remake of the 2000 Korean drama, Autumn in My Heart. He took on the role of Johnny Dizon, the counterpart of Song Seung Heon’s Yoon Joon Suh in the original version.
Who is Dingdong Dantes?
Dantes started his television career as a commercial model for a dairy product at the age of two. He then joined an all-male dance group called Abztract Dancers before transitioning as an actor via Shake, Rattle, and Roll V. He has acted in numerous dramas and films. His latest project is the film Sid and Aya (Not A Love Story) which is currently being shown in Philippine cinemas.
Additionally, he was the Commissioner-at-Large of the National Youth Commission from 2014 to 2016.
4. Dennis Trillo
Filipino actor Dennis Trillo joined Dingdong Dantes in the Philippine remake of Autumn in My Heart, playing Won Bin’s character, Han Tae Seok. For the local version, the character’s name was altered to Andrew Tantoco.
Trillo was also cast as the lead of the remake of Temptation of Wife which aired via GMA from 2012 to 2013. The actor played Marcelo Salcedo, the counterpart of Jung Gyo Bin (played by Byun Woo Min).
Who is Dennis Trillo?
Before joining show business, Trillo was a member of a band called Moyg and the drummer for the DIY band in Baguio. He officially started his entertainment career in 2001 as part of ABS-CBN’s Star Circle Batch 10. He then took minor roles in television dramas before transferring to GMA where he received his breakthrough projects.
Following his Temptation of Wife role, Trillo landed his most controversial role to date as Eric del Mundo, a gay, in the drama My Husband’s Lover in 2013. He last acted as Liam Ilustre in the television series The One That Got Away which wrapped up its run in May 2018.
5. Richard Gutierrez
Filipino actor Richard Gutierrez played Justin Lazatin in the Philippine remake of Full House. His character is the equivalent of Rain’s character, Lee Young Jae, in the 2004 hit Korean drama of the same title.
The local version of the drama aired via GMA from November 2009 to February 2010. It earned a 24.5 percent rating for its pilot episode and 29.8 percent for its finale.
Who is Richard Gutierrez?
Since his childhood, Gutierrez has been in the limelight. He is part of a prominent showbiz clan that made his introduction to the entertainment industry almost natural. He began his career as a child actor, working alongside his twin brother Raymond Gutierrez, and father, Eddie Gutierrez.
In his teens, Gutierrez successfully escaped the spotlight of being regarded as the son of well-known TV personalities and crafted his own name on Philippine TV as a sought-after leading man. He has starred in various productions including Mulawin, Captain Barbell, Lupin, and most recently, La Luna Sangre.
6. Aljur Abrenica
Filipino actor Aljur Abrenica played the Philippine version of Gong Yoo’s character in the hit Korean drama 1st Shop of Coffee Prince. Abrenica’s character was named Arthur Ochoa, an heir to a coffee business known for his happy-go-lucky and impulsive personality.
In the television series, the Filipino actor acted opposite Kris Bernal who brought to life the Philippine version of Yoon Eun Hye’s Go Eun Chan, Adrea “Andy” Gomez.
Coffee Prince aired from October 8 to November 23 in 2012. It premiered with a viewership rating of 21.8 percent, while its finale received a viewership rating of 23.3 percent.
Who is Aljur Abrenica?
Abrenica began his showbiz career in 2006 at the age of 16 when he joined the reality-based talent search show Startstruck.
Since winning the talent search show and being named the “Ultimate Hunk” in its final episode, he went to star in various television and film projects under GMA which he left after ten years and signed with its rival network ABS-CBN. Under a new management, Abrenica continued his acting career through FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano and Asintado.
From 2009 to 2012, he was considered one of the “most desired” men in the Philippines, even topping the list in 2009 and placing second in 2012.
7. Gil Cuerva
Filipino-Spanish actor Gil Cuerva debuted as the lead of the Philippine adaptation of My Love from the Star. He played the counterpart of Kim Soo Hyun’s well-loved character Do Min Joon, which is locally known as Matteo Domingo.
The role was originally rumored to have been offered to Alden Richards, who is now also reportedly being tapped to play the local version of Song Joong Ki’s Captain Yoo Si Jin.
Compared to other adaptations, My Love from the Star received lower ratings with its highest only at 11.1 percent.
Who is Gil Cuerva?
Prior to his casting as Matteo Domingo, Cuerva is a model based in Hong Kong. It was in his return to the Philippines when he auditioned for the Philippine adaptation of the Korean drama that would mark the start of his local showbiz career.
At present, he plays the lead role in the daytime series, My Guitar Princess, opposite Julie Anne San Jose.
