32, and still counting.
What seemed to be just another military-themed love plot, becomes one of the biggest phenomenal drama hit this year. As the first Korean drama simultaneously broadcast with China, ‘Descendants of the Sun’, starring Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo, has met with remarkable success, which has also resulted itself to be one of the most successful exports of Korean content.
As of March, the drama has already been sold to 32 countries, which include United States and European countries, such as Germany, France and Italy. In China and Japan, the broadcasting rights for the drama have been sold at $250,000 and $100,000 per episode respectively. For the record, the price in China has also broken the previous record held by the 2014 ‘My Love From The Star’ by eight times higher, which was then sold at about $35,000 per episode.
The production company NEW revealed, “As soon as the first episode was aired, we reached the break-even point, where gains from the drama sales reached the production cost of 13 billion won.”
