Seoul International Drama Awards 2018 Bestows Grand Prize Honor To “Babylon Berlin”

Crime drama Babylon Berlin emerged victorious over 28 drama finalists in the recently concluded Seoul International Drama Awards 2018 (SDA).

Held on September 3 at KBS Hall in Yeouido, Seoul, the 13th edition of the Seoul International Drama Awards celebrated remarkable television dramas enjoyed by TV critics and worldwide fans.

The Grand Prize was given to one drama with the most outstanding artistry, originality, and popularity among the categories: TV movie, mini series, serial drama, and comedy.

Set in 1929, Germany’s Babylon Berlin was lauded by the judging panel, owing to its delicate and sophisticated production.

The visually appealing cinematography was also film like blending well with its deft narrative.

German non-fiction drama 54 Hours won the top honor for TV movie category with its impeccable rendition of a real-life hostage situation in 1988.

Kilian Riedhoff of 54 Hours was awarded the best director of the awards night for his outstanding helming of the media’s immorality and ineptitude while describing the hostages’ fear and mind games between the captors and the police.

South Korea’s Mother claimed the mini series category with actress Lee Bo Young crowned as the best actress among the selection of talented international artists who competed for the honor.

Taking the top spot for the serial drama is France’ Candice Renoir, a crime thriller about a female police officer which provided an insightful depiction about the prejudice and discrimination against women.

The best comedy award went to Israel’s The New Black, a work that depicts the uncomfortable but meaningful deviations of geeks in devout Jewish culture.

For individual award categories, Joan Pera from Spanish drama, The Power of Silence, achieved the best actor citation. The writers of Austria’s A Dance To Remember, Uli Bree and Klaus Pieber, received best writing accolade for penning the story of a husband’s hard work to get his whole family back together.

As the haven of the globally acknowledged television dramas, a special non-competing category for Korean wave dramas were also recognized in the event.

SBS drama While You Were Sleeping scored the Grand Prize award through its unique fantasy-romance themed story equipped with the rightful amount of thrill and empowering messages.

Something in the Rain (jTBC) and Fight For My Way (KBS) brought home excellence Korean wave drama awards honors.

Son Ye Jin and Park Seo Joon won best actor prizes from their superb performances in the above mentioned series.

In addition, Asian Star Awards were given to actors who are actively engaged in active activities in Asia. Japan’s Ryohei Otani and Indonesia’s Tatjana Saphira Hartmann are recipient of the awards.

A special jury award was bestowed on Malaysia’s The Memoir of Majie, a woman empowering story set in 1950’s.

Japan’s Solitary Gourmet was selected as an overseas drama loved by Korean fans.

The Seoul International Drama Awards 2018 is the only international TV festival in Korea. This year, a total of 268 entries from 56 countries were exhibited, breaking the records from the previous years.

Some of the winning dramas will be available on VOD via the official channels of LGU Plus IPTV and Naver TV Seoul Drama Awards until September 10th at 12:00 p.m.

The awards ceremony will be aired on recorded on SBS channel at 5:00 p.m. on September 4 with Jeon Hyun-moo and Choi Soo-young taking the MC roles.

Local and overseas actors and celebrities graced the event such as Hollywood actor Daniel Dae Kim, Taiwanese actor Jasper Liu and Japanese actress Fujii Mina.

Park Bo-young, who won last year’s best actress award, also attended the event as well as Sung Si Kyung, Hwang Chansung, veteran actor Park Geun-hyeong, musicians Eric Nam and Red Velvet were also on stage for the awards ceremony.
