K-Drama Review: “Confession” Trudges On Safe And Predictable Territory But Boasts Of Commendable Acting
tvN’s Confession provided a solid background story and set up an excellent court stage.
Backed up by exemplary acting, the legal drama unfolded smoothly. The connections between the characters revealed themselves with dramatic flair, adding suspense to each episode.
THEME: LEGAL, INVESTIGATIVE, CRIME
LENGTH: 16 EPISODES
BROADCAST DATE: MARCH 23 – MAY 12, 2019
MAIN LEADS: LEE JOON HO, YOO JAE MYUNG
HIGHLIGHTS: SOLID BACKGROUND STORY, EXCEPTIONAL ACTING
DRAWBACK: ENDING FELL SHORT OF DRAMA,
RELATED DRAMAS: WHISPER, SUITS, LOOKOUT, Remember
Lee Joon Ho had a heart transplant when he was younger. However, his father was convicted for murder at the same time. Joon Ho vowed to find the truth about his father’s crime and became a lawyer himself.
Upon investigating the murder, he uncovers layer after layer of the murder. High-profile government officials are involved. Joon Ho discovers evidence of corruption that’s so high up the government but he’s unperturbed by what he discovers. Together with Detective Ki Choon Ho, they work together for the acquittal of Joon Ho’s father. The court is shocked when it’s revealed that Joon Ho’s father was just the fall guy for the murder. He finally gets his father acquitted and with his father finally free, Joon Ho works hard to get the real culprit convicted.
From the lead actors to the villains, the cast of actors truly brought their game to the court. Yoo Jae Myung is a passionate police detective who only wants to bring justice to light. He still continues the investigation even after he is removed from his position. Whenever Jae Myung is around, he brings a feeling of safety and security.
Do I dare say that the best acting came from Ryoo Kyung Soo? As Han Jong Koo, he started off the drama on such a high standard that I was disappointed by the succeeding villains. The intensity of his acting was so captivating that even though he was the murderer and you’d want to see him thrown in jail, his psychosis was so palpable that you can’t help but be enthralled. His modulated voice and his usage of his eyes captured the craziness of his character. I found it amazing that even the way he moved his eyeballs to look at someone else can make a huge impact to his character.
Connection Between Characters Were Well-Established
I loved that the background of the story created such an intricate connection between the characters. Both Do Hyun and Yoo Ri’s father needed a new heart, but eventually Do Hyun received the new heart. Yoo Ri’s father passed away suddenly, but Yoo Ri and Do Hyun remained friends. Years after, they discovered that their new secretary, Madame Jin, was the surgeon who did Do Hyun’s heart transplant. Furthermore, it was her son’s heart that was given to Do Hyun.
Shallow Lead Character Development
I think that the long drawn-out heroic scenes of Do Hyun were a bit too much. He had several scenes of himself staring intensely at the accused that were a bit unnecessary. Furthermore, Do Hyun’s character seemed a bit weak, given that he was the lead. I expected for him to be more cutthroat, but instead, he threw around promises of revenge and stared intensely at others. Given his solid background story, I expected a bit more depth in his character development. His lack of emotional attachment to others around me left me wanting for more personal involvement.
The first few episodes were solid, captivating and kept you at the edge of your seat. I was happy to feel that “can’t wait for next week’s episode” frustration. However, after Heo Jae Man and Han Jong Koo’s brilliant performances, those who were in power, the “bigger fish” lacked intensity. Despite its thrilling start, it landed safely without any fanfare or climactic drama.
Overall, it was a solid legal drama. The drama entertained me as the story line developed well. Despite its shortcomings, the lead Do Hyun captured the viewers’ attention, as did the rest of the cast.
