INTERVIEW: Apink Aspires Healing Through Their Unique Music In “SELF”

By  |

Apink returned with their 10th mini album, SELF, on April 5 after a year and two months.

The group’s latest album contains the meaning of existing for one’s self and not for what other people want.

SELF includes the title song, “D & D”; as well as “Withcha” and ‘Me, Myself & I’ written by Chorong with a message of consolation.

In addition, “Candy” and “All I Need to Know” that was released last year are also included.

Celebrating the 12th anniversary of their debut this year, Apink shared the creative process for their latest album in a recent Q&A interview.

Relaying their thoughts about the latest comeback, Chorong and Namjoo give a preview of the preparations.

“I am very grateful to be able to enjoy preparing for the album like this with the members. I prepared it with excitement, thinking how much the fans would like it. – Chorong

“I had a strong desire to let you hear good songs. It’s been a while, but I’m thankful to the fans who waited for us, and I think it will be a more valuable comeback.” – Namjoo

As their latest comeback aligns with their 12th-anniversary debut, it was special for Apink to gift fans with new music.

“Of course, the things we’ve been making over the years have not been easy, but rather than thinking about our years of service, we’re just spending each year thinking, “What kind of music should we do with what concept?” Also, as each year goes by, it seems that I am so grateful that I can be with the members for being able to release an album so far.” – Chorong

“I am very grateful for every moment. I am most grateful to the many people who have worked quietly beside us for 12 years, and above all to Panda. I thought I wanted to be active for a long time, but I’m really fulfilling my dream, and I want to be with you for a long time in the future.” – Bomi

Conveying what to expect in their 10th mini album SELF, healing and confidence are what Chorong, Namjoo, Eunji, Bomi and Hayoung aim to aspire to.

“I wonder if it will be a welcome album because the title song literally contains the meaning of ‘healing’, which is Apink’s identity. – Eunji

“I think it speaks of what Apink likes or what people expect from us. So, it feels like wanting to show ourselves, our confident selves.” – Hayoung

Detailing the meaning of SELF’s title track “D & D”, Bomi and Hayoung take turns describing it.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve been able to show off Apink’s refreshing and bright side. As you’ll know from the lyrics, it’s a song that can really heal you a lot if you listen to it when you’re afraid and having a hard time.” – Bomi

“The title song “D & D” is a song about going my own way or going your own way. Just as many people gained strength with the song “NoNoNo”, I hope that this song will become another healing song because these days many people are struggling and suffering because of people and society.” – Hayoung

When asked about the focus of preparation for the album, Bomi responds that SELF is an album expressing Apink’s own color and also gives strength and healing. Echoing her co-member’s thoughts, Eunji emphasized the group’s unique identity is layered in the album.

Highlighting the concept or charm of SELF, Namjoo and Hayoung express their thoughts.

“Energy. These days, I think Apink has really good energy both as a person and as a team. I put that happy energy into this album, and I hope that the energy will be well transmitted to those who listen to and watch this album, so that everyone will be happy and have strength.” – Namjoo

“It is a discovery. It is how we can rediscover ourselves. For all who will listen, we hope you find your own way and overcome problems if you have them.” –Hayoung
