And the number one spot goes to … BTS!

There is no denying that 2016 was a year for Big Hit Entertainment‘s representative boy group BTS. It has soared high and above, with chart-topping songs, music show wins and Daesang to boot.

Stopping seems not to be in BTS’s vocabulary as the boys snagged the top spot in Billboard’s 10 Best K-pop Album of 2016. BTS’s Wings album beat industry seniors BIG BANG‘s MADE and I Just Wanna Dance of SNSD‘s Tiffany in the list.

Billboard named the album as an “accomplishment all its own”. Wings debuted on the 26th spot of Billboard 200, the highest position ever for a K-pop album. The album also swept worldwide iTunes chart after its release, snagging first place in 26 countries.

“There’s forward-thinking production coupled with lyrics discussing topics important to their listeners like the dark side of adulthood and mental health issues,” wrote Billboard.

The US-based magazine also consider Wings as a “good model for any band trying to move itself forward while concurrently establishing its different members.”

Aside from BTS, JYP Entertainment‘s rock band DAY6 took the second spot with its second mini-album Daydream. According to Billboard, it is “an expertly crafted sophomore release”.

“The strongest girl group output of 2016” is EXID, taking the third spot, and the highest among girl groups. The group’s first full-length studio album Street was a delivery of the group’s promise in the early part of its career.

YG Entertainment’s sibling duo Akdong Musician are in the fourth spot with Spring. The magazine considered the album an even deeper dive into their unique personalities and quirky musical styling.

RnB singer DEAN also reigned high at the fifth spot. DEAN took the K-pop scene by storm with his 130 Mood: TRBL, which it spotlights his versatility to handle turn-up jams and tender tunes more suited for the bedroom.

BIGBANG’s long overdue album MADE seemed to be a good farewell album before members begin enlisting in the military next year. Billboard wrote that as a testament to the versatility of K-pop acts, MADE took the sixth spot in the list.

SM Entertainment’s Tiffany is at the seventh place in the list, with her solo debut album ‘I Just Wanna Dance’.

Self-producing idol group SEVENTEEN followed Tiffany behind to be at the eighth place, with its newly-released and “genre-spanning” album, Going SEVENTEEN.

MAMAMOO‘s Melting, which showcased the quintet’s full capabilities, is at ninth in the list.

Finally, “one smooth flight from start to finish” of GOT7‘s Flight Log: Departure completed the list of the 10 Best K-pop Album of 2016.
