K-Drama Premiere: “The Third Charm” Sweetly Tickles With Fascinating Discovery Of Love Theme
“That one person you can never forget” sets the theme of jTBC’s romantic comedy – The Third Charm.
Seo Kang Joon and Esom brightly painted the pilot week of The Third Charm in comic notes and romantic hues. We hope that it will never ever change in the next 14 episodes. *wink
Premiere Week Rating:
As expected from the director who worked with notable TV drama rom-coms including classic favorites Full House, The World That They Live In and You’ve Fallen For Me, his signature witty capture of heart-fluttering moments coupled with funny scenarios were already evident in the opening week of The Third Charm.
A big pile of cutesy and love, The Third Charm promises rom-com cravers a story relatable to people who feel different kinds of love towards the same person.
Pilot Week Recap
Living in an organized routine, On Joon Young (Seo Kang Joon) is the type of son whom parents want to have because of his utmost focus to live an orderly life as a college student and a reliable person to his family.
Things change when he meets Lee Young Jae (Esom) – the woman who epitomizes his exact opposite. She lives with a goal, but refuses to have a plan to reach it.
His first encounter happens when they report a pervert groping a woman on board a subway train. Then he meets her again in a blind group date with his friends and her high school friends.
Their romance escalates when Joon Young agrees to have his hair permed by Young Jae, who dreams of becoming a famous hairdresser and has set aside going to college due to financial constraint.
The mood, the moment, and the close proximity push Young Jae to kiss Joon Young, who willingly parts his lips to accept his first kiss.
When Joon Young invites her to attend a one-day bar event organized by his college department, Young Jae reluctantly accepts, but seeing him pout make her say that they will officially start dating when she goes to the event.
On the night of the event, Joon Young is in a gloomy state with no sight of Young Jae arriving. But then she surprises him, looking stunning with a pretty red dress to officially seal her promise.
She is well-received by Joon Young’s circle of friends which annoyed her attention-seeker high school friend. The latter gets more furious when Young Jae and Joon Young end up winning the couple dance contest.
Upset about Young Jae’s presence that steals the limelight from her, she answers on Young Jae’s behalf when she is asked about her school details. She takes Young Jae’s bag to scatter the things inside it and reveals she is a high school graduate who came from a poor family.
Feeling dejected, Young Jae storms out of the place and refuses to answer Joon Young’s call for days.
Passing through the five stages of grief after his one-day relationship ended, Joon Young signs up for military conscription. But during his breaks, he still hopes for a chance to meet the first girl he has ever loved again.
Nearing the end of his university days, Joon Young sees a notice for police officer recruitment which Young Jae once teased him about. She said he will not be able to catch criminals because he is too shy to do it.
He proves her wrong by officially becoming a police officer. In one of the police operations he is tasked to lead, time stops between Joon Young and Young Jae – whose gazes finally meet again after seven years.
Pilot Week Afterthoughts
That was a zesty and nimbly layered opening week! The Third Charm easily makes the viewers smile with its amusing narrative flow about tracing the romance that happened, is happening, and will happen between a man and a woman, who have opposing life habits and personal principles.
Seo Kang Joon amazingly grasps his character well to match Esom’s equally superb portrayal. It seems going to a conflict that will involve the pairing’s individual love apprehensions. And I am excited to root for it.
Hopefully, no external predictable conflict will arise owing to how the lead couple endearingly hooks on the projected love journey they initially teased the audience about.
Neatly written and directed, jTBC’s new offering takes you to a whole new story of discovering love with the same person over and over again.
The Third Charm takes the Friday-Saturday slot on jTBC.
Fans can watch it on VIU.
