Early Days of Weki Meki: i-Teen Girls and I.O.I
Before officially debuting as Weki Meki, Lua, Lucy, Elly, Doyeon, and Yoojung were known as i-Teen Girls who were trainees under the talent development program of Fantagio Music called Fantagio i-Teen. In 2015, i-Teen Girls made appearances in To Be Continued, a web drama featuring label mates Astro.
The following year, Elly, Doyeon, Yoojung, and Sei participated in the first season of Produce 101 with Doyeon and Yoojung ultimately debuting as members of I.O.I. By July 2017, Fantagio Music finally confirmed that it would debut a new girl group under the name Weki Meki.
The Official Start of Weki Meki
Suyeon, Elly, Yoojung, Doyeon, Sei, Lua, Rina, and Lucy debuted as members of Fantagio Music’s newest girl group on August 8, 2017 with the extended play Weme. The EP, which saw Yoojung participate in the lyrics writing, was led by “I Don’t Like Your Girlfriend”. It peaked at the seventh spot of Gaon Weekly Album Chart. It also became the highest selling album by a girl group who debuted in 2017.
In 2018, the girl group came out with its second EP Lucky with “La La La” as its lead single. In support of the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, the members released “Butterfly”, a remake of an original soundtrack from the 2009 film Take Off. The song was also part of the Lucky album.
Almost eight months after Lucky, Weki Meki returned with its first single album Kiss, Kicks led by “Crush”. Yoojung once again took part in the lyrics writing by penning the rap portions of the songs in the album.
